ISTHMIAN LEAGUE-SOUTH CENTRAL DIVISION ——– SATURDAY 1ST OCTOBER 2022

Visitors Marlow placed 3rd in the division and Merstram at the foot of the table. Home manager Peter Adeniyi, vastly experienced as a player, coach and talker in this football, endeavouring to form a side to everyone’s pleasing but is struggling to be a –Mary Berry, as the ingredients are there but the mixing is not quite right -or is it !!

The game was sprinkled with a bit of skill and honest commitment, and what else do or should we expect. In fairness there was the odd bit of referee baiting just for that extra throw, yard free kick and the odd claim for a booking. Both goalkeepers had their own styles-colours of kit -Bland and a dashing pink, the latter really doesn’t need to make a boo boo.

Marlows front line were eager to impress but their feet were ahead of them, and maybe a bit of thought would have served better, but they did try to disturb Merstham’s back line, more so than the hosts who were at time’s too slow and deliberate in the passing, which can happen when things are not going that good. Player/manager Peter Adeniyi was trying to teach the 3 L’s – look learn and listen. It worked to a point

2nd half and Marlow tried to push on, but honest and at times hesitant defending left the home crowd in hope of better something to come. Again, both sides showed glimpse of skill but more individual than teamwork, and that showed in the score line. One thing I wouldn’t or didn’t like to mention was not only my poor grammar, but the bad language- and they haven’t read this report yet !! But there were young kids running around and a young lady sitting next to me, and she did ask me if I was ok!! It wasn’t directed at people but frustrating when a smile and piece of encouragement would surely suffice. Read of Merstram was sent off late on, and the hosts done well to withstand a minor bombardment as the minutes ticked away.

The game was watchable, mainly because of the effort of the players, but we got we expected and saw.
