LEATHERHEAD VS MERSTHAM 23RD OCTOBER 2021
Well done the ground-staff at Leatherhead, fantastic job on preparing the pitch after the heavy sprinkle this week.
Well a little early but this was a mixture from the house of horror’s and halloween. The football manual thrown out of the ground, players not really to blame .We have got to realise what standard of football we are watching and the players not being put under so much pressure as to their expectations of their performances ,yes some are better than others ,but that is life.
We start the encounter with both teams showing poor distribution ,then poor defensive work from Merstham back line ,allowing the ball to bounce, a hesitant keeper Toby Bull, allowing leatherhead forward Onokwai ,to nod home the host in front .Leatherhead winning the 50/50 challenges ,but kept finding themselves in a very exposed position of being flatter then my locals pint. Then on 30mins Merstham’s Henry ,holds the ball up defender not patient and upends the forward. Henry steps up and scores low to keepers right hand post Its one each .The game has never flowed but a genuine interest has taken place .A few flashes of skill from both sides but what turned up was worth the entry fee. Ball played up to visitors John Ufuah who jinked around leaving any marker out of sight to unleash quite a remarkable top corner finish,2-1 Merstham .But hold not to be out done Leatherhead have an eager beaver in the disguise of, Alex Sami, the work started just short of the centre circle he lost the ball ,got the ball back moved forward and thumped the shot some 28 and a half yards flying into the roof of the net, just before h/t score 2-2.
The second half was a hard watch .Loads of mistakes but Merstram looking the more accomplished, plenty of huff n puff ,and I thought the missing peoples agency was here, well at least on the pitch no one could find any-one !! 75mins a little bit of fortune arrived for Merstham in the form of Ufuah, as he dashed in behind the Leatherhead back line ,advantage in the chase but raised his foot high towards keepers chest, both collide but ref Simpson awards a penalty—personally doubtful but Ufuah finishes score now 2-3.The battle commenced but nothing really happened apart from substitution’s, no one shone because every one seemed to have no nerve to put their foot on the ball.
All said and done only my opinion ,football is to be enjoyed for players and fans.
