National League

6TH AUGUST 2022

Life is full of twists and turns, up’s and downs – this game possessed the complete bundle. I personally was like a kid waiting for a present and wasn’t disappointed(and me at the tender age of 64 !)

Chesterfield FC, your support needs applauding – a fantastic following.

We start and Dorking appear to be in awe of their visitors – backing off and allowing players time to control, and interchange in and around the box. Homework must of been done, they seem to load up on Dorking’s left hand side – WARNING ! WARNING ! not for five or so minutes Dorking have any real possession, then awarded a throw in which was launched into the area, the ball sent into orbit then returned with interest which saw Chesterfield keeper Covalan up ended. He was swiftly treated and Chesterfield continued with their business.

We are 15 minutes in and no have they only moved into your house, they have put their feet up on your brand new table – at this stage liberties were being allowed. The impressive Dobra twisted and turned allowing him space to slot a neat pass into a Asante who calmly slotted home to keeper Huk left hand side. It was inevitable a 1-0 for the visitors, on 21 minutes. Pressure piled on and a few late shut down’s and a linesman flag still kept Dorking breathing. Dorking endeavoured to pursue the game, and on 25minutes a ball reached Seager in the 6 yard box. but a shot with no power – mind you he was being well marshalled. On 26 minutes Chesterfield keeper Covalan, who was kitted out in orange, managed to collide into Seager, who appeared to have been “TANGOED” and what appeared a lenient referee Cartmel had the Dorking crowd doing cartwheels as he issued a straight red on 26 minutes. – Best to leave this one to judge and jury, no replays here ! but Chesterfield had their own VAR – Very angry reaction.

No reserve keeper, so on field player Ollie Banks takes the gloves(i believe the last banks of Chesterfield was the great man Gordon Banks, RIP) The visitors reshuffled and went about their business. Dorking on the back foot again. Asante feeds a beauty of a pass into Dobra who puts the 10 men 2-0 up in 41 minutes. For the remainder of the half Dorking forced a few corners and Banks punches clear on a couple of occasions with a good supporting cast around him.

Second Half, changes for Dorking Billy-Joe Taylor and Luke Moore replace Cheadle and Gallagher.

Well you can only D:Ream – “Things can only get better”

Off we go , and I am witnessing fantastic perseverance from Chesterfield’s lone striker Quigley who should change his name to Squiddly Diddly because he was getting his arms and shirt pulled to and fro throughout the proceedings with no complaints.

Dorking need to be more assertive and Chesterfield. although resolute, possibly a little complacency crept in. Changes again were afoot, Dorking’s Jebb for Seager and the visitors changed the dangerous Asante with the willing Maguire as replacement.

It all seemed a little cat n mouse with an attitude of “can you or cant you” ? a ball was flung into the box, there was no prominent challenge and MCShane to pull one back on 66minutes to make things a little interesting. The away support were beginning not to favour ref Cartmel as he constantly changed the flow of the game – blowing hot and cold. Both sides appealing – but I think he has created the problems himself. However why do linesmen not get much authority ? surely it would make like easier, as in life give someone an inch they will take mile.

Chesterfield playing with 5 sometimes 6 across the back, was surely inviting trouble. Then Dobra on a yellow was replaced by Whelan with Chesterfield seeming to be content to just play short passes in Oldaker who in turn fed Quigley and the team marauds forward. During this period. Dorking were beginning to enjoy space and finally realised that delivering an early ball into the box with no full time keeper in there would get it’s rewards – HOORAY, HOORAY !

Then on 77minutes Chesterfield didn’t go out to meet the supplier and could you want for Moore ? no you couldn’t as he scored the equalizer which swept past Banks left hand, and the front room chair and table were back in their rightful place. 2 – 2

Oldaker replaced by Gyasi to offer more legs into the affray. Final 10 minutes, saw continual squabbling but as Will Smith said” You won’t beat the Men in Black” then in added on time the ref dismissed Chesterfield’s Horton for a second bookable.

Chesterfield would feel hard done by, but surely your all experienced enough that “If’s and but’s don’t count and your a fine side. Dorking fortunate, but if someone offer them the chance – they will take it.

A game with a little bit of everything for everyone. Safe journey home.
