ISTHMIAN LEAGUE-PREMIER DIVISION SAT 12TH FEBRUARY 2022

Worthing league leaders visit The Moatside today. I’m sure in the knowledge that Merstham have only scored once in their last five Isthmian fixtures- however changes are afoot so lets see .Football should all be about honesty and giving a little more when you thought you gave every-thing.

It’s a cold chilly day with Worthing hoping to breeze through this one, but I’m sure Merstham do not want their house blown down. Only three minutes in and home keeper Sami Tlemcani dashes out to do an Hokey Cokey but luckily pulled his left leg in before it went out – reprieve for the Chelsea debutante.

This hard working shift was going to be a long one ! Merstham began to hurry and scurry which at times left Worthing looking a little bewildered., however on seventeen minutes their defender Webber smashed a long range effort. This was followed on twenty three minutes by a thunderous shot by Colbran, that hit the underside of the bar, went straight down, calls for “was it over” — not for now chaps. Merstham working harder than Fagin’s boys as Worthing tried to “Pick a pocket or Two” and nearly did with seconds to go of the half as Rancine saw his good chance tipped over by keeper Tlemcani, leaving us with a mundane watch as the half finishes 0-0

We start the half hoping for Howard Jones to sing ‘Things can only get better ‘, mind you the Merstham faithful more than happy, as I dared comment on the proceedings-fair play sir .,I’ve taken note .Within minutes of the restart ,Wothing’s Golding cut back a neat cross to cause havoc ,but alarm bells not set off Merstham chase the danger away .Just after this Merstham enter Worthing territory and gain a free kick as Skipper Rancine tugged on on a shirt, resulting free kick was the first real shot in anger at the visitors goal a little wide but wide enough. Then a smidgen of a pass found Cook advancing towards goal but only for Worthing keeper Male to block with his feet that resembled a snowboard, then managed another block again as a follow up rained in .Then on 56mins the entry fee was paid for as Pearce hit a piercing shot no one could stop, league goal No 31a great effort sadly where will Merstham muster an equaliser,1-0 to the visitors .The game takes a swift change ,as Worthing knowing a win is what is required ,start a laborious journey towards the final whistle ,and even in these pandemic times are trying to claim more than what you should, poor ol ref !! The game was like a turn table with with no record on it, this 45 was becoming a harder watch than the first .Then on 85mins a Pearce free kick on the edge of the box spill from Tliemcani grasp and in steps Reece Myles-Meekums to notch a second to the in command Worthing. All said and done Merstham worked their socks off ,but no match for a better word more professional outfit. F/T Merstham 0- Worthing 2
