ISHMIAN  LEAGUE

MERSTHAM  V  ENFIELD  TOWN

22nd February 2020

It’s all about the weather.

“ whether it’s on – whether it’s off ? IT’S  ON ! “

Game starts very sedately, however Enfield’s front two  Bricknell & Charles appear very eager, and they will have to be as the blowing conditions favour Merstham.

Nine minutes, intelligent Enfield combines simple football on the deck – fullback Hatton passes across to Charles to finish and a flat footed Merstham are one down.

Fifteen minutes, first bit of inter-play from Merstham followed by a couple of long range efforts shows all’s not lost. However, twenty three minutes – Enfield free kick finds Merstham’s keeper Pierson who punches weakly and Young’s rivals Enfield into a two goal lead. Merstham at this time getting turned over – more than a pancake!

Enfield keeper McDonald, three great saves from Jacquart, point blank from Ayoola and parries a Folkes shot wide. Merstham pull one goal back on forty one minutes, Ayoola nods home – close range.

HALF – TIME         MERSTHAM 1    ENFIELD  2

Merstham start defensively, now playing into the wind. Enfield not quick – but they can play football.  They are allowed too much time, and ex Crawley man Lyle Dellaverde passes into the net on fifty two minutes, after a poor clearance.  The game looks like going away from Merstham.  Enfield in pursuit of more, but Merstham hold on until eighty five minutes – self destruct button again, allowing Bricknell to finish unattended.

We creep into the last few minutes. Enfield easy winners, aided by unforced errors.

The reality is not converting, makes for disconcerting.
