PREMIER  DIVISION

MERSTHAM V MARGATE  – 1ST FEBRUARY 2020

Must be getting old, watched the teams line up and thought they were the mascots.

First ten minutes:  it was good to see Merstham’s Ekpiteta trying to slow things down and create space and movement beyond the mid field, that seemed to be content on providing a shield for the back line ( a little bit early, don’t you think). Margate were very direct, and four footballs were dispatched over the fence – boot sale items for someone!

Seventeen minutes in. Margate keeper Tupper challenged forward Ayoola resulting in a penalty, which Ekpiteta converted.

Merstham ahead but still didn’t look confident. Five minutes later, O’Halloran combined with Brown – should have been converted, but you will have to change his name to O’No.

Another chance fell for Merstham on forty four minutes, but Tupper redeemed his earlier miscalculation to keep it 1-0 to Merstham at half time.

SECOND  HALF

Like the first half I was wondering what Margate’s plan was for the afternoon. Although, big, strong and shouted a good game, in fairness, apart from the odd  “Touch of class” from (on loan) Jimmy Witt on occasions. they couldn’t seem to up a gear, to cause any concern.

Merstham still gave them opportunities, but even this didn’t seem to spur them into life.  Watching a nervy Merstham earn three points was good enough.

Margate’s travelling supporters had their drummer, but it was the only thing they could beat today.

Final score =  Merstham 1    Margate  didn’t
